Times are changing, but I’m thrilled to see that the tradition of mailing a paper wedding invitation still holds strong. That said, modern couples are embracing new twists to this age-old custom—mixing tradition with tech and a bit of personal flair.
So, what does a typical wedding invitation suite include these days?
The Core Invitation Suite
Most of the invitation suites I see in 2025 include the following (and visit our Etsy store for more designs and ideas):
-
The Invitation: The main event—this includes the names, date, time, and location of the ceremony.
-
Details Card: This card typically covers weekend events, accommodations, dress codes, and links to the couple’s wedding website.
-
RSVP Card: While traditional mail-back RSVP cards are still common, most couples are now opting for digital RSVPs—often via a link or a QR code.
-
Mailing Envelope: The whole suite is beautifully packaged and sent in a single outer envelope.
Let’s talk a bit more about envelopes, because this part has evolved quite a bit.
Inner Envelopes vs. Outer Envelopes
One element I rarely see anymore? Inner envelopes. These were once standard, but now most invitation suites are mailed with just one outer envelope.
Here’s the breakdown:
📬 Addressing:
-
Outer Envelope: Displays the full mailing address and has the postage (don’t forget the postage – the post office has great designs or you can source vintage stamps).
-
Inner Envelope: Traditionally listed only the names of the invited guests—often including children or specifying a “plus one.”
🕰️ Tradition:
-
Inner envelopes date back to a time when mail was delivered by horseback or hand.
-
They served to protect the pristine invitation inside from dirt and wear.
💌 Modern Usage:
-
Today, inner envelopes are mostly used for ultra-formal weddings or when the guest list needs clarity (like including specific children or household members).
-
They add a refined, elegant presentation—but aren’t considered essential.
RSVP Cards in 2025
Let’s be honest—mailed RSVP cards are fading fast.
Most of my clients now choose online RSVPs, and many include a QR code on the details card for guests to scan. While I’m personally not a huge fan of how QR codes look on beautiful stationery, there’s no denying their popularity and convenience. I try to make this prettier or less noticeable by printing on a colored cardstock, or adding some graphic elements around the QR code itself.
In case you’re curious:
A QR code (short for Quick Response code) is a scannable square barcode that stores information like URLs, email addresses, or event details. Guests simply point their phone cameras at the code, and voilà—they’re taken directly to your RSVP form. Note: if you provide your own QR code to be printed on your stationery, make sure it does not expire!
Extras That Elevate Your Suite
While the basics are all you need, we’re big fans of going the extra mile with beautiful finishing touches. A few of our favorite additions:
-
Envelope liners: A pop of color, a cool map, or fun pattern inside your envelope.
-
Vellum wraps: A printed, translucent overlay that adds softness and sophistication.
-
Wax seals: A timeless, romantic touch that feels oh-so-luxurious.
These small details can elevate your suite from simple to stunning, giving guests a preview of the style and tone of your wedding day.
Final Thoughts:
Wedding invitations in 2025 are a beautiful blend of tradition and modern convenience. Whether you keep it classic or go digital-forward with QR codes and minimalism, the key is to make it feel like you.
Let your invitation set the tone—elegant, fun, or somewhere in between—and your guests will be just as excited as you are for the big day!
